Since time immemorial men and women have been attempting to jazz up the simple act of coitus – add pizzazz to it, if you will. From erotic sculpture, to the Kama Sutra, to “Everything You Wanted To Know About Sex – But Were Afraid to Ask”, couples have been trying to lend excitement to – when all is said and done – the action of a piston moving in a lubricated shaft.

Of all the sexual myths and legends, probably the most enduring has been the fabled G-spot – that mysterious protuberance that is tantalizing difficult to locate but which, when stimulated, results in orgiastic nirvana. Now for a short lesson from Biology 101. Women experience (if they are lucky) two types of orgasm. The more common variety – clitoral orgasm – is pleasurable enough, but if a woman really wants the earth to move, nothing can beat a vaginal orgasm. And that is where the G-spot comes in. If yr lucky enough to find it and apply deep pressure, you are guaranteed to blast off into outer space. Not that anyone cares, but the G-spot is named after Dr. Ernest Grafenberg, who first described it in an article in the International Journal of Sexology. (I’ve got a feeling circulation figures are going to shoot up after folks read this article).

Now medical experts have identified the G-spot as a bean-shaped and pea-sized erogenous zone, located behind the pubic bone. It is accessible through the anterior wall of the vagina. The bad news is that not all women appear to have a G-spot. Clear anatomical differences have been found between women who have experienced vaginal orgasm and those who have not. The lucky ones have a region of thicker tissue, where the G-spot is located.

In this age of quick fixes like Botox and liposuction and fake boobs, it was only a matter of time before cosmetologists offered to enlarge the G-spot, thereby making it easier to find. Appropriately enough, the treatment goes by the name of G-shot. It is essentially a collagen injection administered under local anesthesia. The injection takes less than 8 seconds to administer; and four hours later, you can get frisky again. Enhanced pleasure does not come cheap, however. A single jab can set you back upwards of $1500.

The G-spot is currently available only in Britain and the US. I predict a fresh spurt in medical tourism, this time headed West, instead of East.

Gonorrhea is a common sexually transmitted disease that can affect both men and women. It is called by a bacterium Neisseria Gonorrhoeae, which grows and multiplies in the cervix, uterus and the fallopian tube in women and in the urethra in both men and women. It can also grow in the mouth, throat, eyes and anus.

The gonorrhea symptoms differ from men and women. For women, the primary affected area is cervix. However, if not treated properly, this often spreads to uterus and fallopian tubes. It can also grow in the mouth, throat, eyes and anus. Gonorrhea symptoms in the throat may cause a sore throat, or a pus filled growth in the tonsil at the back of the throat, and difficulty in swallowing. Symptoms depend on the site where the bacteria was introduced, the duration of infection and whether the infection has localized or spread.

Symptoms in males and females:
Gonorrhea symptoms in male include pus like discharge from the urethra with a burning sensation during urination and increase in the frequency of urination. Females complaining about vaginal discharge, difficulty in urinating excessive menstrual bleeding or bleeding after sexual intercourse are the initial gonorrhea symptoms. Approximately 15% of females with infection of inside the mouth of the uterus, the infection extend into the fallopian tubes causing what is known as Pelvic Inflammatory Disease or PID.

Left untreated, gonorrhea can lead to serious and permanent health problems and long term organ damage for both men and women. Untreated gonorrhea in women results in serious infection in the reproductive tract. It may cause complicated pregnancy which might prove a life threat to the mother as well as the child. Gonorrhea can lead to various other long term and serious diseases if it is not taken care off at the initial stage. Some of them are:

1. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)-This is perhaps the most serious complaint in women infected with gonorrhea. PID can seriously damage the fallopian tube in a woman, thus resulting in complicated pregnancy where a fertilized egg develops outside the uterus inside the fallopian tube.

2. Epididymitis- In men gonorrhea can lead to painful condition affecting the testicles, which might lead to infertility.

3. HIV/AIDS- Since the immunity level gets lowered, people infected with gonorrhea can easily contract HIV and they can transmit the virus to someone else.

4. Arthritis, Meningitis and Endocarditis- The gonorrhea bacterium blocks the mucous membrane in the different parts of the body, this lead to inflammation of joints (arthritis) inflammation in the brain (meningitis) and infection of the heart (endocarditis).

5. Infant blindness- Mothers with gonorrhea can pass the infection to their babies during childbirth, which if left untreated can lead to permanent blindness.

Risk Factors:

There are many risk factors for gonorrhea. Primary factors are:

-Indulging in unsafe sex

-Having sex with more than one person

-Being in a sexual relationship with someone who has multiple sexual partners

Prevention:
Using condoms during sexual intercourse are a major protection against gonorrhea. And the most important factor is to reduce the number of sex-partners.

Detection and Treatment:
The most reliable method of detecting gonorrhea infection is laboratory culture testing. Special tests must be done in order to detect the bacterial organism responsible for the disease. Different samples of body discharge like the urethra (where you pass urine), the cervix (opening of the womb), the rectum or the throat are taken and incubated in the laboratory so see if gonorrhea bacteria grow from the sample. Normally it takes about two days for the infection to be detected.

There are several antibiotics that can successfully cure gonorrhea in adults and adolescents. Antibiotic treatment varies depending upon where the infection is located. This would not repair whatever damage has been done permanently but prevent further infection. Early detection and immediate medication are the only way to prevent serious and permanent damage. Gonorrhea does not require a follow-up after treatment but patients are advised to stay away from sex during that time.

Most of the women die of poor reproductive health as a result of unwanted pregnancies or because of sexually transmitted diseases. Sexually transmitted disease, as the term indicates is any sort of venereal disease caused due to sexual intercourse or other sexual intact. The microbes which cause STD’s are just opportunity bugs that don’t consider any gender or sex but only require a warm body. In women, STD’s often lead to infertility, miscarriage, infection among the newborn or premature birth of the child.

You should know the below mentioned facts to protect yourselves from sexually transmitted diseases.

1. STD easily spreads when there is any transfer of bodily fluids such as semen, vaginal secretions or blood from any person to another.

2. If a person has any sort of sexually transmitted disease and some other person has sex with that infected person, he or she is the quickest victim of STD. This is the reason why one should avoid having multiple partners or any monogamous relationship where one person is carrying an infection from a prior sexual encounter.

3. Sexually transmitted diseases are very contagious so if a woman has sex with his partner who is already infected with gonorrhea (a kind of STD) then she holds a chance of 80 to 90 percent of getting the disease. In case her partner carries two diseases namely gonorrhea and Chlamydia, she could be infected with both of them at the same time.

4. Vaginal intercourse carries the highest STD infections but other routes such as anal sex, oral sex or sexual abuse of children and mother to baby infection during child birth are also causes for such diseases.

5. STD’s weakens the immune system and therefore if a person is infected with such disease he or she has more chances of getting other infections. Even if a person recovers from a sexually transmitted disease, he or she has a weak immune system.

6. STD among women is not much obvious as compared to men which show clear symptoms of the disease. As such the problem could be misdiagnosed among women.

7. Most of the times, it happens that women are infected with such diseases but since the symptoms are not clear they unknowingly infect other sexual partner.

8. Men are secretly bisexual and as such they could easily pick up an STD from any homosexual encounter and pass it to an unsuspecting heterosexual partner.

9. Lesbians are less likely to have STD’s as sexually transmitted diseases are not easily spread from woman to woman.

From time to time, I am sure all businesses go about looking to obtain additional leads. The question is; where do we go to gain these leads? The answer to this question is that there are a number of places that we can go to attract new business and in this article I will be writing about these different options.

I have worked within the insurance industry for most of my working life. As I am sure most people are aware, insurance brokers are paid via commission and at times these earnings can be quite substantial. For this reason, the broker I work for has a number of what are called insurance introducers. These are basically people who refer their friends, family and other contacts that they have, to our company in return for a percentage of this commission. This has worked very well for us in the past and is a practice that we are thinking of expanding in the future.

There is also an exciting new development in the insurance world which is the birth of a new website called leadbay. This is a site which is quite similar to ebay and is where mortgage brokers/companies can bid on leads that are put up for auction. This is quite a new concept but is one that I am confident will prove to be very popular and successful. I would like to congratulate the people who thought of this quality idea.

Another idea which has worked very well for our company is being a member of the local breakfast club. This has helped us to meet a lot of interesting and valuable contacts who we now regularly receive referrals from and to whom we are also able to refer our own clients to. The breakfast is not bad either!

These are just a few of many ways that companies can go about gaining additional leads/business.

Genital warts or venereal warts appear as growths or bumps. They develop with sexual contact and are caused by a certain type of virus called the human papillomavirus or HPV. The ones caused by virus called the human papillomavirus are very common STD or sexually transmitted disease.

The symptoms show up in the form of venereal warts in the case of females, as lumps in and around the vagina or anus or in rare cases even the throat. The warts or venereal warts caused by virus called the human papillomavirus may also appear internally, on the cervix. In the case of males, the genital or venereal warts form on the tip of the penis, groin, scrotum or the sensitive inner thigh. In appearance, the ones caused by virus called the human papillomavirus are either raised or flat out-growths that are skin colored.

Medical technology and the understanding of warts caused by virus called the human papillomavirus involve the understanding and timely treatment of the small or large genitalia warts, which are sometimes clustered together.

They could be painless most of the time, but they can be painful in extreme cases. Their late appearance results in lost time before the genital warts caused by virus called the human papillomavirus can even be noticed. It takes anything between several months and even years after the infection sets in for the earliest signs.

Many times, the symptoms don’t even appear at all! In the case of females, the human papillomavirus or HPV virus that cause genitalia warts or venereal warts results in changes in the cervix that subsequently leads to cancer of the cervix. The genital warts or venereal warts caused by virus called the human papillomavirus should be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible with the help of medical technology.

In the case of males infected with genital warts or venereal warts caused by virus called the human papillomavirus or HPV, the risk of cancer of the penis and the anus is maximized. They are highly contagious. They spread through direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected partner.

The genitalia warts or venereal warts caused by virus called the human papillomavirus are caused by strains 6, 11, 30, 42, 43, 44, 45, 51, 52 and 54 of genital HPV and types 6 and 11 are the worst types to get infected with.

Genital warts occur in clusters and can be very tiny or large masses. They also develop in the mouth or throat of a person who has had oral sex with an infected person. The viral particles penetrate the skin during sexual activity. Having sex with a HPV infected person leaves you vulnerable to becoming infected.

Along with many issues surrounding sex, condoms are still a bit of a taboo in polite society. But as well as preventing pregnancy, condoms help prevent the transmission of most sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

However, despite the dangers of unprotected sex, statistics from STD tests show that condoms are not used as often as they could be.

Perhaps if we just got to know them a little better, we’d feel more comfortable about using them. With that in mind, here are 10 of the most interesting things about condoms.

1 – Condoms were used by ancient civilisations

Although the subject is disputed amongst archaeologists and historians, some experts claim that condoms appeared in cave paintings going back 15,000 years. The oldest known representation of a condom in use is in a painting in the Grotte des Combarrelles cave in France. Also, societies in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome preferred small families and are known to have practiced a variety of birth control methods.

2 – First known use against STDs

In medieval times there probably weren’t any reliable STD tests, nevertheless, most people would have known if they had one! It was therefore in 16th century Italy that Gabriele Falloppio wrote the first-known published description of condom use for STD prevention. He recommended soaking cloth sheaths in a chemical solution and allowing them to dry prior to use. Falloppio claimed to have performed an experimental trial of the linen sheath on 1100 men. The experiment supposedly indicated protection against syphilis.

3 – Oldest found condoms

The oldest condoms found (rather than just pictures or descriptions) are from 1640, discovered in Dudley Castle in England. They were made of animal intestine, and it is believed they were used for STD prevention.

4 – The Japanese made theirs out of tortoise shells

In 19th century Japan, both leather condoms and condoms made of tortoise shells or horns were available. Similar devices made from oiled silk paper have also been described in China.

5 – Dr Condom

The alleged invention of the condom by ‘Dr. Condom’ or the ‘Earl of Condom’ is believed to be false. It has also been hypothesized that a British army officer named Cundum popularized the device between 1680 and 1817. However, the true origin of the word is unknown.

6 – Time-consuming recipes

Condoms weren’t always so easily available. An 1824 text offers a recipe with twelve very time-consuming steps involved in making condoms from sheep’s ‘intestina caeca.’ After that much effort, it is hardly surprising that early condoms were considered reusable.

7 – Condoms used to be available only by prescription

In the US, there was a time that condoms were available only by prescription. Doctors would prescribe them to men so that husbands could protect themselves against getting STDs from prostitutes. However, they wouldn’t prescribe them to women so they could prevent themselves from getting pregnant or for any other reason.

8 – Condoms have been sold in vending machines since 1928

The vending machine condom celebrates its 80th anniversary in 2008, courtesy of the company who manufactured the first brand-name condom, Germany-based, Fromm’s. Their product, Fromm’s Act, not only appeared in vending machines first – they also, somewhat bizarrely, had Mickey Mouse as their pitchman.

9 – Invisible condoms

Clinical trials on the ‘invisible’ condom, in fact a gel that hardens with increased temperatures, have been carried out by Quebec’s Laval University. It is one of a number of products being developed which falls into the category of a female condom, some of which have received government approval. The Invisible Condom, however, is still awaiting approval.

10 – Spray-on condoms

German scientist Jan Vinzenz Krause of the Institute for Condom Consultation in Germany recently developed a spray-on condom that is currently in the stages of test marketing. Krause says that one of the advantages to his spray-on condom, which is reported to dry in about 5 seconds, is that it is perfectly formed to each penis.

When you’ve been trying to get pregnant for over a year and still nothing seems to be happening, there’s always that question. ‘Is there something wrong?’ A choice has to made as to whether testing is the road that you will take as a couple. It’s not just the woman who will be tested for infertility, it’s the man as well. Approximately 30% of conception problems is due to male infertility.

Male infertility causes

Male infertility can be caused by a number of reasons, and testing will be carried out for various problems.

    * The one that most people already know about is mumps. Mumps can cause testicles to swell, leading to a drop in sperm production.
* STD’s – Sexually transmitted diseases can cause problems with conception.
* Genetic illness can cause infertility.
* Hormone problems.
* Vasectomy reversal.
* Enlarged veins around the testicles.
* Cancer treatments can stop sperm production temporarily or for good. Some treatments damage the sperm producing cells.
* There may also be a psychological reason behind the infertility.
* Blockages in tubes can lead to low quantity or no sperm at all.
* Poor sperm motility.
* Malformed sperm.

There are course other male infertility causes. Recreational drugs can lower sperm quantity and quality, as can some prescribed medicines.

Smoking and drinking can also contribute towards male infertility.

Anabolic steroids can stop sperm production altogether. They may make your muscles look big, but that’s about the only plus point!

There is good news, male infertility can be treated. Sometimes you may get male infertility treatments on the NHS, or you may have to go to a specialist clinic. There are of course alternative treatments for male infertility. Some men swear by herbal treatments or acupuncture, just be sure to see a qualified practitioner.

There are several steps to take before trying to get pregnant. If you take care of these matters first, it is much more likely that you will have a successful pregnancy.

First, it is important to schedule an appoint with your obstetrician/gynecologist. You should have your annual check up that checks for cancer as well as be tested for all types of sexually transmitted diseases. This is important even if you are in a monogamous relationships as there are some STD’s that you can have that exhibit no symptoms. It is important to be treated for any infections before becoming pregnant. It is also important to find out how long you should wait after going off birth control before trying to get pregnant. Doctors advise waiting various amounts of time after stopping the pill for example. While you are at the doctors you should also find out how long to wait for fertility testing if you do not become pregnant. Some doctors advise a 3 month waiting period and some longer-as long as one year. You should find out from your doctor how long until they would consider testing you.

It is also important to practice proper nutrition when trying to become pregnant. Taking care of yourself is very important. You should take a vitamin-possibly even a pre-natal vitamin before you even try to become pregnant. One of the main vitamin you need during and more importantly before pregnancy is folic acid. Having enough of this in your system will help ensure a healthy baby. You should also limit your caffeine intake and quit smoking before becoming pregnant. Caffeine isn’t good for you or your baby and your doctor will likely advise you against drinking it while pregnant. It is better to try and wean yourself from it before becoming pregnant then wait until you are pregnant and go through the caffeine withdrawal symptoms as well as perhaps morning sickness.

It is very important to give up smoking before becoming pregnant. It is bad for the developing child as well as bad for the baby once they are born. The poor health effects on the mother are well documented also. Quitting smoking is very important for women who wish to become pregnant.

While trying to become pregnant, it is very important to limit alcohol and stop all drugs completely. There is about a two week window where you could be pregnant and not know it yet. Both alcohol and illegal and even some legal drugs can have devastating effects on a developing baby. It is a chance you do not want to take.

When you or someone you love comes down with a sudden illness or gets injured, you don’t want to have to scramble to find urgent medical care. Whether you live in Valley Stream or Lynbrook of Nassau County, New York, it’s important to know the location of your nearest urgent medical care facility. Perhaps it’s in Malverne or maybe it’s in Rockville Centre, or it could even be in Oceanside. Knowing the exact location, distance, and what type of care is offered will be a tremendous benefit when emergencies arise.

Urgent medical care centers are available to you if you have an urgent medical need at a time when your family physician is not available. This could be due to holidays, emergencies after hours, or heavy scheduling. Urgent care centers are also available for patients who don’t have a physician or don’t like waiting in for long periods of time at the emergency room.

Treatments Available in Urgent Medical Care Centers

There are many health conditions or needs that can be treated at an urgent medical care center. Urgent care centers offer labs on-site to patients who require blood work to determine their illness and the treatment they will need. On-site x-ray services are available to patients who are experiencing back pain, joint pain, or abdominal pain. X-ray service is also available for treatment of sports injuries such as sprains and fractures.

Service is provided for patients with cuts requiring suturing at urgent medical centers. Less severe illnesses, such as a persistent sore throat, ear or eye infections, cold and flu symptoms, skin rashes, urinary tract infections, and sinus problems can all be treated by an urgent care physician. Patients who have been diagnosed with hypertension can also receive treatment at the facility.

Exams and Screening

Different types of physical exams such as annual exams and Department of Transportation (DOT) exams for truck driving are also provided at urgent care centers.

Sexually transmitted disease (STD) screening is also available for both men and women. Cholesterol screening and diabetes testing is also offered by urgent medical care centers. Rapid diagnosis, which helps to determine the cause of the illness faster, is offered by many centers as well. This will help in treating the illness without delay.

About Urgent Care Centers

Urgent medical care centers are open seven days a week with convenient hours from morning to night for patients seeking emergency medical needs. Medical treatment is provided for patients of all ages, and since the centers are walk-in, appointments are not needed. Conveniently, most major insurance plans are accepted. Physicians at the medical centers are board certified in emergency medicine and usually provide all patients with personal attention and excellent care.

Whether you are a local resident, tourist, or business traveler in Nassau County, New York and have an urgent need for prompt and professional medical attention, it is good to know the location of the closest urgent medical center.

As a criminal defense attorney, I regularly encounter women, mostly, and sometimes men that have been arrested in a police “sting operation” that focused on targeting prostitutes and/or johns. In case someone reading this article does not know, a prostitute is one who exchanges sexual favors for some form of compensation, usually money. Johns are those who pay for the sexual favor-usually men, but as you can imagine, the roles could reverse. I believe that conducting these police sting operations reduces the quality of life in our society and that the only persons “harmed” by prostitution are potentially the actors. Not to mention, it is a waste of police time and resources to prosecute these “victimless” crimes.

Legalization improves neighborhoods and promotes safety

Consider this: if places where prostitution would naturally occur are forced out of business, like brothels, some motels, or apartments, police action drives the activity into the streets of neighborhoods where it otherwise may not exist. Thus, residents of the neighborhoods are exposed to the activity against their will.

Also because of prostitution being forced into the streets, the dangers to many prostitutes greatly increase. Prostitutes whose jobs involve working at night and getting into cars with strangers can be, and often have been, easy pickings for serial killers and other sociopaths. Some criminal justice studies have shown that prostitutes are the most frequent targets for serial killers.

A sensible solution to these problems would be to follow the example of some European cities, where prostitution is allowed in certain designated areas. People who are interested in the activity go to places where it’s permitted, and they leave alone the neighborhoods that don’t wish to be associated with it. Not only are the prostitutes working in a safer environment, but the residents of neighborhoods are not bothered with the traffic, cat-calls, or other related behaviors that they may find reprehensible.

Legalization reduces crime

Another problem with prostitution arrests is that they cause long-term increases in crime and drug abuse in society. Margo St. James, a former social worker and a leading advocate of legalizing prostitution, believes that when a woman is convicted of prostitution that it acts much like a brand or negative stigma, like the “A” in The Scarlet Letter. This could make it much harder for the female to find gainful employment, which then begins a cycle of arrests for more prostitution or other criminal offenses.

Keeping prostitution illegal also contributes to crime because many criminals view prostitutes and their customers as attractive targets for robbery, fraud, rape, or other criminal acts. The criminals realize that such people are unlikely to report the crimes to police, because the victims would have to admit they were involved in the illegal activity of prostitution when the attacks took place. Also, there is a belief that prostitutes may have large sums of cash on them, which makes them an attractive target for other criminals.

If prostitution were legal, these victims would be less reluctant to report to police any criminal acts that occurred while they were involved in it. This would significantly improve the probability of catching the criminals and preventing them from victimizing others. In many cases, it could deter them from committing the crimes in the first place. That view is consistent with the experience of the European countries where prostitution is legal. They have far lower crime rates than the U.S. overall.

Studies have been conducted in the Nevada counties where prostitution is legal and the results were similar: those counties that provide legalized methods for prostitution to exist are quite peaceable and have lower crime rates. Interestingly, in November, 2004, in Churchill County, Nevada, a ballot proposal to outlaw prostitution was rejected by a 2-to-1 margin, even though the county is primarily Republican and supported George W. Bush for president.

Legalization promotes liberty and privacy

Laws against prostitution violate Americans’ fundamental rights of individual liberty and personal privacy. Thomas Jefferson and other founders of the U.S. envisioned a society where people can live without interference from government, provided they don’t harm others. Lest we all forget, when the founders of the United States fled Europe, they were fleeing the very intrusions and governmental oversight that has developed in this country over the past thirty to fifty years, but especially in the the post 9/11 era under the watch of the Homeland Security Act.

As Jefferson said in his First Inaugural Address: “A wise and frugal Government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement.” Or as Arthur Hoppe wrote about consensual acts in the San Francisco Chronicle in 1992: “The function of government is to protect me from others. It’s up to me, thank you, to protect me from me.” Combined, these two statements demonstrate the very principle that I described above-that government should protect its citizens and not try to dictate their very lives.

Similar to issues such as birth control, abortion, and the right to death with dignity, this issue involves people’s fundamental rights to control their own bodies and decide the best way to conduct their lives.

In a free society, it makes no sense for the government to be telling persons – particularly the poor – they cannot charge a fee for harmless services they otherwise are at liberty to give away. To paraphrase George Carlin: Selling is legal, and sex is legal, so why isn’t selling sex legal? The simple answer is that some people are offended by this act and want to impose their “moral authority” on others.

Sex isn’t just for the handsome: some side benefits of legalization

Likewise for the customers, there’s no reason their freedom should not include the right to purchase the companionship and affection they may want but do not find in other aspects of their lives.

For example, one disabled man told researchers he was lonely and visited prostitutes because “I’m ugly, no women will go out with me. . . . It’s because of my disability. So prostitutes are a sexual outlet for me.” Another man reported that he did the same for a number of years due to being “anorexic and very reclusive. There was no chance of forming a relationship.” A physically unattractive man added, “I pay for sex because that is the only way I can get sex.” Another person said his experiences with prostitutes and other sex workers helped him overcome an extreme aversion to physical intimacy, which had resulted from years of physical and emotional abuse while growing up. He explained: “I very likely would have died a virgin if I hadn’t somehow gotten comfortable with physical intimacy, and sex workers enabled me to do that. At least for me, it’s been a healing experience.”

Consider this: in some ways alleviating the sexual need that we all have could be a form of therapy with a paid professional. It’s perfectly legal to meet with a psychologist to discuss sexual concerns, but it is not legal, in most places, to meet with a prostitute to work out that tension on your own… if you pay for it. Through prostitution, someone may be able to meet a need that would otherwise be unfulfilled, which could result in more violent criminal behavior, like sexual assault (aka “rape). In other words, I believe that the sexual drive becomes so strong at times, that some people are unable to control it and will obtain that release they desire, even against the will of the other participant. This behavior should not be condoned and must remain illegal, but consensual sex between adults, even for money, hurts no one but the “moral police”.

What about Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)?

Many who oppose the legalization of prostitution argue that STDs would spread and that some unsuspecting person may contract a STD if prostitution were legal. However, it is my contention that just like alcohol sales, which are regulated as to time, place, and quantity in some instances, that if prostitution were legalized, and monitored by the government, much like in some European cities, the government could require registration and testing for the prostitutes. Granted, this would be more governmental oversight, and while I am not a fan of “Big Brother”, I think this would be far less intrusive and more logical than the current system in place with criminalizing two already legal behaviors: sex and sales.

Consider this: the government could collect a registration fee from anyone seeking a license for prostitution, it could require testing every six months or whatever period of time was prescribed, and it could contain the behavior to registered facilities. All in all, it appears that the government would benefit by having an increase in its revenue stream, and the public would benefit because they who choose to participate in sexual encounters with prostitutes would be better protected by the registration and testing. Communities would benefit by the containment to a given area. And under this system, criminalization would occur for those not following the system put in place.

Legalization puts law-enforcement resources to better uses

Numerous legal commentators point out that using law enforcement resources against prostitution substantially diminishes the resources available to fight other crimes committed against persons or property. This nation desperately needs more efforts applied to solving those crimes, because arrests are being made in connection with only about 20% of them. And, if you look around to your local law enforcement agencies across the United States, most of them are desperate to find new recruits to fill in the already thinned lines of officers. By removing officers assigned to “sting operations” and special divisions like “Street Response Teams” more officers could be available to answer calls or follow-up on more serious reports currently on file.

While I do not have statistics to support this, though I am confident they exist, I believe that the damage inflicted on society by corporate crime and white-collar crime far exceeds the harm caused by all the street crime combined. Just ask the victims of the Enron and WorldCom scandals – many of whom lost their life savings….

As for white-collar crime, the police undoubtedly know that their jobs and careers are safer by making prostitution arrests than by investigating criminals who cause serious harm but either wield political power or have strong connections to those who do. And when the corruption involves others in the police force, the notorious “Blue Wall of Silence” leads all too many officers to ignore and protect the wrong-doing of badge-wearing criminals too.

Conclusion

Our society would be better served if the police directed their efforts away from the activities of consenting adults and toward preventing and solving real crimes involving clear victims and injustices.
