If diagnosed with a viral STD, both the infected person as well as his/her sexual partners must be treated immediately.

A person infected with HIV who is also suffering from a viral STD will transmit both HIV and the viral STD more easily.

Before we get upset about future human fertility, let's not forget that with the exception of Chlamydia, none of these infections will necessarily lead to infertility, though in their own ways, they can contribute especially if undetected and treated. Even Chlamydia does not always mean pelvic infections and scarring. Somehow, if we can make all this less scary and more normal and ho-hum, it will be easier to get people to test--it's a minor but important condition, here's how you deal with it to reduce problems--and to make better calls.

I think std testing should be somehow made a regular, non-stigmatized thing. It should be done with every annual exam, every physical for men and women, every doctor's visit for people of a certain age, no questions asked, no excuses accepted. This especially applies to chlamydia and herpes, which often have no symptoms. That's right: herpes can be a completely silent disease, folks! It's appalling how few of my sexually active friends ever bothered to get tested, unless they knew for certain that their partner had an STD.
